18th September 2004, our own Day of Dance |
|||
|
After a wet start, the day soon improved. This is Leeds on the town gardens. |
The Argarmeles Clogs. |
John of Gaunt outside 'Britains Smallest Pub'. |
Us dancing also outside 'Britains Smallest Pub'. |
|
Us again with the '24hrs Yacht Race' going on in the background. |
Newburgh also on the Prom. |
Graham from Ryknyld Rabble. dancing a solo jig on the town gardens. |
|
|
Early August 2004 found some
of us going to Southern France. The Argarmeles Clogs
were invited,by the local folk society,to the little village of Clairvoix.
The four of us that are married to Argarmeles dancers went along to fly
the flag. With a little help from conscripts we were able to do some dancing.
Some had driven out and fitted the weekend around a holiday. A number
flew out (to Rodez) including four of us who stayed in a B&B. Those
who camped, very kindly ferried us four around.
|
|||
|
On Friday evening the camped provided a BBQ for us. |
On Saturday evening the locals provided a meal for us. In the village square. |
One of the local dishes was a mixture of Cheese, Garlic & Mash, called Aligote. |
After dinner we danced for 1 1/2 hrs! mixing & matching teams. |
|
The excellent local 'ceilidh band'. |
The dancing started after we finished, at 11-15pm! |
Saturday saw us dancing in the nearby town of Macillaic, where the campers were staying. |
Those dancing were grateful for any shade. It was still 34C in the shade! |
|
Red Rose Rapper are part of the Argarmeles. So this provided further interest to the locals. |
In such heat, the local swimming pool provided much needed respite. |
The two chaps that ran the B&B, had been too busy to get to see any dancing. So we did a private demo for them. |
The new Anglo French team! |
|
Early July 2004 saw
us joining Rivington Ladies for their dance weekend based in and around
Preston.
|
|||
|
In June 2004
we joined Forest of Dean Morris Men for their weekend of dance.

Whittlesea Straw
Bear festival January 10th & 11th 2004
|
|||
|
Whittlesea is in the Fens, so there were plenty of 'Molly' sides. |
This was our 1st visit to Whittlesea,
and with over 30 teams there on the Saturday there was plenty of opportunities
for photos. Unfortunately, with me playing melodeon that weekend, I was
unable to take any photos of us (Good I hear you all cry).
|
Also there were quite a few 'Border' sides. |
|
|
'Cotswold' was represented too. |
Also 'Longsword' as here with Stevenage, and of course ourselves. |
Also a few 'Rapper' sides such as Boojum. |
Orion Longsword had come over from the U.S.A., with their own individual take on longsword dancing. |
|
All the sword teams were grouped together at lunchtime so that Orion could get a look at the other swords teams. |
Also there were Penguin Rapper. |
The famous 'Straw Bear'. Take a look at the larger photo and tell me which is the one with straw for a brain? |
Orion had a repertoire of dances created by themselves. |
|
In this dance they had incorporated some appellation style stepping to reflect their own culture. |
After an exhausting day we finished up in the 'Bricklayers Arms' (That's a pub not a friendly builder), and were treated to a mumming play. |
Some were more exhausted than others.
|
In the evening we went on a dance tour of the local pubs and kept on bumping into Penguin who were doing the same. |
|
In the last pub of the evening we stumbled upon Persephone having a quiet drink. So we thought a quiet drink sounded good but they had other ideas. |
On occasions we have been known to raise the roof, but John takes this too literally. |
And some were more exhausted than others. |
On the Sunday those remaining go to a hall to watch and partake in a showcase. Here are the local Longsword team Wype Doles. |
|
And White Rose Morris |
Then it's all outside to burn the Bear. |
I hope the guy inside got out first. |
Roast chestnuts anyone? |

Wensleydale
Festival of Sword Dancing 17th-18th May 2003
|
|||
| This weekend was based on the Green Dragon Inn, Hardraw, Nr Hawes.N Yorks. With various sword & rapper teams invited to dance around the dales. On the Saturday two coaches set off from the Green Dragon to visit & dance at a number of pubs in the area. The weather unfortunately had other ideas & it rained almost constantly all weekend. But undaunted, the dances just had to spend more time in the pubs. The teams were:-Brompton Scorpers (Northallerton), Clydeside Sword & Step (Glasgow), Goathland Plough Stots (Goathland), Pengwyn Rapper (Newcastle/Darlington), Sallyport Sword Dancers (Newcastle), Southport Swords (Southport), Stone Monkey Sword Dancers (Nottingham), Wype Doles Longsword (Whittlesey). Many thanks must go to Mark the landlord of the Green Dragon for looking after everyone so well & laying on a beer festival for us & Vince & Sue Rutland for organizing the event so splendidly. | |||
|
Friday night was for relaxing & drying out, after the journey with a few! drinks. |
Some were more relaxed than others. |
Saturday started at the Crown in Hawes, with Sallyport dashing out in a small gap in the rain. |
Five minutes later back inside with Stone Monkey. |
|
Back outside with Brompton Scorpers. |
Next pub, The Moorcock & we are back inside & it's our turn. |
A nice little place, but not a lot of room for longswords. |
The Cover Bridge Inn for lunch, & a short dry spell. So the Swords try Southport 1. Up the bank one way, down the steps the other, interesting. |
|
Stone Monkey working their lunch off. |
After another couple of stops, it was back to the Green Dragon & during the evening a chance to meet up with the teams on the other coach. |
We brought our own Green Dragon to visit his ancestral home. |
The Green Dragon trying to cadge some magic life giving elixer (beer) out of Mark. |
|
Wait for me! |
Take 2... Oooooo that hurts! |
Kev & Thorston from Clydeside doing a step dance. |
Some Goatland Plough Stots in mufti. |
|
Pengwyn Rapper did some nice figures. |

Sunday & we had a chance to see Wype Doles Longsword. Outside the Crown in Hawes. |
Clydeside did some fine stepping. |
|
And the sun finaly came out on Southport & Papa Stour. |
|
We had a great weekend despite the weather and even did the world premier of Southport 2. But unfortunately have no photos yet. Are there any out there? |
|
|
Unfortunately due to lack of webspace I have had
